6D: What’s in a Name?

Our name is derived from the six degrees of freedom concept that is fundamental throughout various fields, most notably engineering and robotics. It refers to the freedom of movement that an object has in three-dimensional space. These six degrees are categorized into two groups: translational and rotational.

Translational

Translational degrees of freedom pertain to the movement along the three axes of space: X, Y, and Z. Imagine a point in space. It can move forward/backward (along the X-axis), left/right (along the Y-axis), and up/down (along the Z-axis). Each of these movements constitutes one degree of translational freedom. In practical terms, think of a drone flying in the air—it can move in any direction within these three axes.

Rotational

Rotational degrees of freedom involve rotation around these same axes. Consider a rigid object like a box floating in space. It can rotate clockwise/counterclockwise around the X-axis (roll), tilt forward/backward around the Y-axis (pitch), and turn left/right around the Z-axis (yaw).
