Let’s meet the next wave of Mechanical Engineers: Prutha Deshmukh

Prutha Deshmukh

Q: Can you tell us a little about your background?

I am from Pune, India. My mother is an accountant and father a civil engineer. I earned a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from University of Pune. Today I’m working toward a Master’s in Mechanical Engineer at the University of Cincinnati.  My thesis is based on digital image correlation in the field of structural dynamics

Q: Why did you decide to attend the University of Cincinnati?

I wanted to earn a Master’s in the field of structural dynamics/vibrations + FEA; and the University of Cincinnati has a very good course structure to offer in this field.  The professors at UC are very well experienced and renowned in the field. Also, the research going on at UC aligned very well with my interests

Q: What is your major?

Structural Dynamics. Specifically Noise Vibration Harshness under Mechanical Engineering.

Q: How many places have you been a co-op / intern?

None in the Unites States except for 6D, though I have done two internships in Pune, India during undergraduate studies.

Q: Talk about your experience with 6D… how is/was it different from other internships?

It has been only a little over a month since I started working at 6D, but I have learned a lot more than I did in my previous experiences. One of the best things about working at 6D is that I have been involved in all sorts of work that I could be doing here. This includes writing proposals/budgets, hand-on instrumentation as well as analysis and post-processing. I do not think any other place would have given me the opportunity to do all these tasks.

Q: What are some of the things you learned while working at 6D?

So far, I have learned how to lay strain gages, follow test plans, conduct data acquisition tests, post processing using multiple software packages. I’ve also learned how to do cost estimates and write proposal for clients. The exposure to multiple analysis platforms and tools like ODS, Campbell diagrams, order tracking, FFT, etc has been a very good learning experience.

Q: How is your experience in working at 6D?

It has been only five weeks since I started working at 6D; but I’ve learned a lot, as I said earlier. Everyone is very helpful and always ready to guide me. I really enjoy working at 6D.  The work culture at 6D is very good and quite fun.The work here is very interesting, and I hope I get to work in the same field in future.

Q: Did you get to travel much to work on projects?

Yes, in fact I travelled out of state on the first day of work! It was a very good hands-on experience working at another facility and meeting new people.

Q: How will what you learned at 6D help you to become a better engineer?

6D has given me a chance to learn multiple skills in a short time. It will help me in my research and my future career. The data acquisition and multiple ways to look at the data for analysis have given me quite a few ideas regarding my thesis already.
